The Cornish Rex: A Curly-Coated Cat

The Cornish Rex is perhaps the most bizarre-looking cat breed in modern times, and its unusual appearance has earned it the nickname of "pixie cat", "alien cat", or "space cat". With their long, lean, cheetah-like bodies and their fine, downy, curled coats, they demand a double-take from everyone who lays eyes on them.

Hailing from Cornwall, England, the breed began by accident when a seemingly furless male kitten was born to a litter of barn cats. As the first Cornish Rex, dubbed Kallibunker, grew older, his pink, naked body was soon covered with tight, silky, cream-colored curls, and his owners knew he was a rare treasure. All living Cornish Rexes are descended from the single individual.
The Cornish Rex's bizarre appearance stems from a combination of unusual genetics and careful, selective breeding. Ordinary cat breeds have three types of fur that compose their coats. The outer fur, which is slightly wirey, a middle layer called awn hair, and a thin layer of downy undercoat. Cornish Rexes are unique among cat breeds in that they lack all but the very thin, fine undercoat.
Because this thin layer of down is so fine, the Cornish Rex's dainty fur curls loosely and luxuriously over its body, falling in fine rows that accentuate the curvature of the cat's body. The fine-boned, lean curves of the Cornish Rex were improved when the breed was introduced to the United States, where it was cross-bred with the Siamese. This perfect combination created the whippet-like builds of the Cornish Rexes we know today.
Cornish Rexes have a reputation for being affectionate and possibly hyperactive. They are typical lap cats, often demanding attention from their owners as well as visitors. The Cornish Rex also tends to be exceedingly playful and may enjoy games that involve chasing or "hunting" toys, other cats, and even humans.
Because of its charming, active personality and wonderfully unusual appearance, the Cornish Rex can be a remarkable, unique addition to any home seeking a playful, affectionate cat. These otherworldly beauties are as vivid as they are unique.
